The Substance is set to debut in theaters on September 20, 2024. Despite receiving glowing critical reviews, Demi Moore’s highly-praised horror film is projected to have a relatively modest opening weekend compared to other new releases.
This body-swap horror, directed by Coralie Fargeat, stars Demi Moore alongside Margaret Qualley.
The story revolves around a TV fitness icon, Elisabeth Sparkle (Moore), who is forced out of her job due to age. Desperate, she participates in a mysterious experiment called The Substance,
which creates a younger version of herself (Qualley). However, as expected in the horror genre, the experiment takes a dark and unexpected turn.
Critics have showered praise on Moore’s performance, with Variety even suggesting that her role could earn her an Oscar nomination.
The publication remarked, “Moore hasn’t always had the chances to showcase her full range—until now. Under Fargeat’s direction, she delivers a haunting, multifaceted performance that could be her career’s finest.”
The film boasts an 89% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviews calling it “Audaciously gross, wickedly clever, and potentially Demi Moore’s most powerful performance yet.”
The movie has been hailed as a standout achievement for both Moore and Fargeat.
Despite these rave reviews, The Substance is projected to open with just $3 million at the box office, according to Deadline.
This would make it the lowest-earning debut among the week’s new entries. Transformers One, another film releasing the same weekend, is expected to earn around $30 million, while Halle Berry’s latest thriller is tracking for an opening between $4 million and $7 million.
However, Deadline speculates that The Substance could outperform these projections and bring in more than the estimated $3 million.
