In a recent chat with US Weekly, Jeremy Renner revealed he was completely blindsided by Robert Downey Jr.‘s unexpected return to the MCU.
“The son of a bi*ch didn’t say anything to me!” Renner exclaimed, clearly caught off guard by his friend’s decision to reprise his role—not just as Iron Man, but reportedly as the villain Doctor Doom.
Given their history from The Avengers, one would expect a heads-up, right? “We’re good friends. There’s the Avengers family chat. The original six. He said not a peep,” Renner noted.
After realizing he hadn’t been informed, he started bombarding Downey with messages, asking, “What’s going on?” Despite the surprise, Renner remains supportive, stating, “It’s exciting news.
I’m really, really excited about it,” indicating he’s still on board with the Marvel hype train.
But there’s more! Renner hinted at his own possible return as Hawkeye, potentially facing off against Downey’s Doctor Doom in upcoming films like Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).
“You got Downey back, the Russo Brothers back in the mix. This is a direction where Marvel is going to do well,” he expressed optimistically, adding, “We’ll see. I think we’ll probably be doing it. It’s all brand new.”
This announcement comes at a pivotal time for Renner, who has been recovering from a severe snow plow accident in 2023. “I’m gonna be strong enough, that’s for sure.
I’ll be ready,” he told Entertainment Tonight, hinting that Hawkeye could make a triumphant return alongside his old ally, Doctor Doom.
Marvel fans, brace yourselves! We could be in for some epic showdowns as Renner and Downey reunite. Perhaps this time, Downey will give his friends a heads-up before unleashing another MCU bombshell.
