Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, and Ravindra Jadeja delivered regular strikes, leaving Bangladesh in a precarious position at Tea on Day 2 of the first Test in Chennai.
After India was bowled out for 376, Bumrah’s three wickets and two each from Akash and Jadeja left Bangladesh reeling at 112/8, still trailing by 264 runs.
Bangladesh faced early setbacks after dismissing India. Bumrah changed his angle, coming from around the wicket to bowl Shadman Islam for 2.
Zakir Hasan was lucky to survive an lbw shout from Mohammed Siraj, but India opted not to review, only to see replays reveal a clear dismissal.
Following three overs each from Bumrah and Siraj, Akash and R Ashwin took over; Akash struck twice in consecutive deliveries, reducing Bangladesh to 22/3.
Najmul Hossain Shanto, who started promisingly, fell to Siraj, caught by Virat Kohli at second slip. Bangladesh slumped to 40/5 when Bumrah dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim with a late-moving delivery, caught by KL Rahul.
A brief recovery came from Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das, who added a half-century partnership, striking eight boundaries between them.
However, India countered with Jadeja’s spin; Litton’s sweep led to a catch for substitute fielder Dhruv Jurel, while Shakib’s reverse sweep ended in an edge to the keeper.
Hasan Mahmud and Mehidy Hasan Miraz managed a few boundaries, but Mahmud fell to Bumrah right before Tea, leaving Bangladesh eight down.
Earlier, India’s innings ended quickly with Taskin Ahmed taking three quick wickets and Mahmud becoming the first Bangladeshi pacer to achieve a five-wicket haul.
India added only 37 runs to their overnight total, despite a strong lower-order performance led by Ashwin’s 113 and Jadeja’s 86, who together added 232 runs for the last four wickets after being at 144/6 on Day 1.
Taskin, starting with the new ball, dismissed Jadeja for his overnight 86. Ashwin edged one for four off Mahmud, and Akash Deep struck several boundaries.
Akash contributed 17 in a 24-run stand with Ashwin before falling to Taskin. Taskin then ended Ashwin’s impressive innings, leading to Bumrah’s dismissal, completing Mahmud’s five-wicket haul.
Brief scores: India 376 (R Ashwin 113, Ravindra Jadeja 86, Yashasvi Jaiswal 56; Hasan Mahmud 5-83, Taskin Ahmed 3-55) leads Bangladesh 112/8 (Shakib Al Hasan 32, Litton Das 22; Jasprit Bumrah 3-28, Ravindra Jadeja 2-18, Akash Deep 2-19) by 264 runs.
